Ossus

The Ossus Defense Force (ODF), is the military organization formally charged with the protection of Ossus, and the trade lanes to and from the planet. It has also been known to operate in conjunction with other forces in foreign areas of the galaxy. It is broken down into four major sections; the Army, the Marines, the Navy, and the Starfighter Corps. It's ranks are filled entirely by the native, Force sensitive Ysannans.

History

The ODF began when, then Grey Jedi Knight, Jaecyn Riddick stole an Imperial Type-II Star Destroyer from the Imperial Junkyard, just prior to the battle in which Kashyyyk would become a nigh permanent stronghold for the Sith. Since then, it was the goal of Master Riddick to create a force that would deter the Sith from ever wanting to set foot on Ossus, as they had done when Riddick's family was killed. The entire force, first time around, would number almost 3,200 ships, of which the Ferrin Sha would be one of, just before a Galactic Fleet Authority Stipulation required that the number of all fleets in the galaxy be cut. With that stipulation, the ODF, which was regarded as one of the better and larger forces throughout the galaxy, was severely decimated, without a shot being fired.

For several years, the only ship permitted to serve in the ODF was the Ferrin Sha, as all others had to be mothballed. It was during this time that the Mandalorians, corrupted by sith agents, struck at Ossus. Since Ossus was in a compromised state, due to the GFA, and few allies came to aid Ossus in the face of a well unified Mandalorian threat, the battle was lopsided, but eventually Ossus was returned.

Since then, the ODF Navy, and indeed the rest of the force, has been rebuilt with more advanced ships and equipment than it had started out with. The starfighters that had served in the ODF Fighter Command since the first major swelling of the Navy still serve in the current iteration of the ODF, with upgrades to go with the new ships. Most notably upgrading from XJ-7 X-Wings to XJ-9s, as well as a local reengineering drive to upgrade the Mk IV E-Wing to the Mk V, a new breed of starfighter of Ossan doing.

Structure of the Ossus Defense Force

ODF Marines

The Marines operate as a mobile army. Both the ODF Army and ODF Marines are trained equally, since Marines operate on ships and on other planets, and the Army is kept to the same standard, allowing for some measure of adaptability and cross-over, should the need arise.

Breakdown of the Marines

It isn't as rigid as that of the planetside forces, due to the differing sizes of ships.

ODF Navy

This section of the Ossus Defense Force is the primary Space bound section of it. This segment of the ODF is responsible for the defense of Ossus from afar, before any oppenent can reach the surface. Should an opponent break through the lines, the Army takes on defensive roles.

There are 24 ships currently attached directly to the ODF Navy:

  • 24 Ferrin Sha-class Heavy Battlecruisers
    • More ships were planned to be built
    • Two other fleets, under the command of Devlin Dewe and Zhan Vectivus aid in defense.
  • Several wings from the ODF Fighter Wings serve along side the ODF Navy.

There are also 19 orbital emplacements managed by the ODF Navy:

  • 1 Space Station with full complements (Derilyn-class w/ complement of 6 squadrons of K-Wings)
  • 2 Golan IV SuperGun Defence Platforms (Purchased from Golan Arms)
  • 4 Golan III Platforms
  • 6 Golan II Platforms (with K-Wings)
  • Crystal Gravfield Trap Grid, positioned at all hyperspace exit points to detect cloaked ships emerging from hyperspace.
  • 6 Cloaked Gravity Well Projector Stations disabling hyperspace exit (default range of 200,000 Km. Max range of several planetary radii.)

Breakdown of ODF Navy

  • Task Group (aka Battle Group)
    • 24 Task Groups, centered around and named after a Ferrin Sha-class Heavy Battlecruier.
  • Task Unit
    • Upto 50, no less than a pair of Makaan-class Destroyers and any escorting frigates.
  • Task Element

There are 29,232 fighters in the starfighter wings.

SOCOM

The Special Operations Command (SOCOM) is the joint services command unit that oversees the special forces. The personnel that make up its membership are among the most skilled on Ossus, and have been trained in the whole spectrum of Force powers, and addition to their combat skills.

(Structure and information TBA)

IntCom

The Intelligence Community is another of the ODFs joint service operations. This organization brings in information from the various Jedi factions, traders, and captured combatants, as well as other sources deemed of value, and credibility.

The Information gathered from the various sources is disseminated and sent to the various services, where service intelligence person break it down again into info and objectives pertinent to the individual service.

Total Numbers

  • Army: 4,147,200 Soldiers
  • Navy: 902,400 total personnel
  • Marines: 360,000 Soldiers
  • Starfighter Wings: 812,000 across 406 wings. (29,232 pilots, remainder as maintenance, bomber crews and admin)
  • Reserves: 7,212,000
  • Grand Total: 13,433,600 personnel

Behind the Scenes

The ODF was loosely based on the structure of the US Military, and on the concept among small countries that everyone serves at least some time in the military. While not every one on Ossus serves directly in the military, every able bodied person is capable of service due to the training, heritage and culture that the native Ysanna have as Jedi, and as hunter-gatherers.
