Malcolm Rennoh was born on Corellia as the son of an Epicanthix mandalorian warrior named Jayzin Rennoh and a corellian spacer named Katrin Halikar. His mandalorian father raised him like a mando child due to the frequent absence of his mother. They lived on a farm not far outside of Coronet in the highlands but Mal always dreamt of more then a farmer's life. When Mal was 14 he saw his father killed while he was out on a mission with him, and it was then he started accompanying his mother on her ship. When Mal was 16, his mother left him on the farm while she went to Kessel on a spice run. While she was gone her ship was attacked and scuttled by pirates who left no survivors. Now orphaned, Mal inherited the farm and his parents decent wealth which was kept in a trust to be given to him in full when he turned 21. For the next year he kept up on the farm but when he turned 17 he, in his eternal quest for adventure and excitement away from the doldrums of farming, enlisted in the armed forces of The United Federation of Free Worlds.

Miltary Service

Wolframpant

At age 17 Mal joined up with the legendary 57th Uplanders, famously known as "The Balls and Bayonets brigade" and served with distinction in multiple campaigns. During basic he distinguished himself as a marksman with pistol and rifle as well as hand to hand and knife combat. This prowess, undoubtedly due to his father's mandalorian training, got him accepted as a commando when a Special Forces drill sergeant, another mando named Tantos Skirata, got a look at his file and requisitioned him to be a part of the 57th's first commando team, known as Wolf Squad. Tantos took him under his wing in what was considered to be an almost fatherly way and Mal excelled in every training scenario. When the squad was officially formed, he was given the rank of Staff Sergeant and command of what would become one of the best known and highly decorated commando squads in the Federation. He received numerous commendations for prowess and valor, including the coveted first class bloodstripes for a classified action, and was offered a commission and career options. Mal, even though he had enjoyed his time, was ready to move on, so after 10 years in the service, he left to pursue a spacer's life.

Captain of Tranquility

Now age 27 and having inherited all his parent's money, Mal decided to undertake his mother's trade, running cargo of various levels of legality to planets around the galaxy. He put his money into buying and refitting an old Firefly class Mid-bulk transport that he called Tranquility. He gathered a crew and began a six year career traveling and getting into all manner of trouble. Perhaps most telling about him, was during his entire career he never performed a single illegal activity in UFFW territory, due to his oaths as a soldier to defend the peoples and laws of The United Federation of Free Worlds.

During this time, he participated in a variety of activities, including running guns and aiding various resistance movements. It was in the midst of such activities that he met the woman that would forever change the course of his life.

Inara

During his adventures, he happened to make some powerful enemies, including the crime lord Nksa, whom Mal had accepted a job from, but failed to complete due to his sense of moral justice. Mal sent the down payment back to Nksa, but the crime lord swore vengeance anyway, dispatching an assassin to kill Mal. This assassin, an arkanian offshoot named Inara, would prove to have a profound effect on him.

Mal was on Nar Shaddaa when Inara caught up to him. A furious fight between the two ensued which ended with Inara's knife to his neck. Preparing himself for the final blow, he was surprised when Inara couldn't bring herself to finish him. It turned out that during her hunt for him, she had learned why he didn't finish the job and now that she had him at her mercy, couldn't kill someone who had been so noble. She confessed that the more she had learned about him the more she found herself falling for him. They spent that first night together, and before long had fallen deeply in love with each other, for the next 3 years they were happy and planned to wed secretly so as to keep each other safe, and towards the end of that time they discovered that she was with child. They learned that she bore a daughter and decided to name her Kailii.

Blood and Tribulation

Though they were happy, they found themselves constantly hunted, Nksa was not one to forgive and so continued to send assassins, the price on their respective heads rose higher and higher as they killed or evaded every assassin, mercenary, and bounty hunter sent after them.

Alas, their luck could not hold forever, and in the seventh month of her pregnancy they were taken by a large band of mercenaries. They were then brought to Nksa's stronghold and tortured by the sadistic Feeorin. Inara was raped and beaten into miscarriage while Mal was made to watch and be tortured. He saw Inara killed before his eyes, and would have been next, after some more torture, if not for the timely arrival of his crew who had tracked them down and came to the rescue. They succeeded in getting Mal out and left.

Consumed with the vengeful fire of his mando heritage, Mal ordered his crew to head back to the fortress so he could avenge his wife and unborn daughter. He ordered them at least to take him there, as he would not order them to participate in what was tantamount to a suicide mission. To his eternal gratitude and honor, every one of them volunteered to help, refusing to let their captain tread the dark paths of vengeance alone.

As they approached, Mal, for the first time and only time in his life, put on his father's armor and took up his father's sword. When they finally began their assault, Mal butchered most of the gang himself, consumed with a battle rage that his crew later told him had terrified even them. When he finally got his hands on Nksa, he butchered him so totally that the crew saw only a bloody pile of shattered bones and shredded meat in the aftermath.

Tranquility's last voyage

Mal sank into a deep depression following the murder of Inara. He drank too much, and became distant from his crew. His crew, however, knowing that he meant nothing by it, still supported him and the ship kept going. However a year later, it all came apart when on a spice run. Pirates came out of nowhere and quickly overwhelmed the small ship, a few of his crew were killed, but the others forcibly removed the captain from the ship where he wanted to stay and die. After they reached safety in one of the small shuttles they went their seperate ways. Mal returned to his family's farm on Corellia, to continue his now meaningless existence.

Life dirtside and the start of a new adventure

For the next two years Mal lived as a farmer, using what was left of his money from spacing to buy seed and a CK-6 swoop. He mostly stayed around the village nearest his home. But would occasionally go into Coronet to break up the monotony. He fell into a bit of a depression, fearing the life of adventure he had always wanted was over barely after it began. One day, while in Coronet, he was approached by Jedi Master Wrix Windoo, who had felt his force presence, and told him that he believed he could be a jedi. Mal, who had never known anything about being force-sensitive, was skeptical, but agreed to go to the Jedi Academy in Coronet for a midi-chlorian test. When the test came back, he was discovered to have a midi-chlorian count of 9400, which Master Windoo told him was good. Master Windoo offered him a spot as student at the academy, which Mal, seeing the chance to once again escape the eternal tedium of farming, accepted, becoming a student of the Corellian Jedi Order.

SSG. Rennoh, Jedi learner.

Mal immediately took to the atmosphere of excitement and mystery at the academy, feeling refreshed and full of joy for the first time in two years. Even though he was quite old for a learner, he took to his lessons with the vigor of a being a third his age. It wasn't long before he learned to feel the force all around him, and showed remarkable acumen with the art of telekinesis, advancing in it quicker then he ever could've guessed he would. While sitting down for lunch, he met Master Arhiia Concordia, who was fresh from the battle of Korriban. They spoke at length, and he found that he enjoyed her company immensely. Master Concordia even offered to take him as a padawan, if the Corellian Masters would allow it.

A few days later, he decided to cut his ties with his former life, selling his farm and swoop. While sitting down for a quiet drink, he heard a loud explosion coming from the tracks. Rushing out to see if he could help he got on the train, only to find that it had been attacked by a criminal organization known as the Fist of Kast. Mal leapt into action, using his training as a commando to easily take down his first opponent, only to be faced with a far more challenging one, a sith lord calling himself Darth Ion.

Not seeing a way out, Mal ignited his training saber and pulled his knife to engage the sith. After a short but brutal fight. Malcolm, utilizing his gift for psychological warfare and prodigious talent with Telekinesis, defied the odds and killed the Togruta sith in single combat, using the force to throw his knife, burying it into the evil warrior's throat.

Shortly after the fight, Mal again met Master Concordia, as well as another jedi, the famous Master Kel'al Raganella. They both seemed shocked and surprised by the fact that a mere learner, who had yet to even be taken as a padawan, had slain a sith lord with nothing but an antique pistol, a training saber, and a beskar combat knife. Mal took this as encouragement, believing that he had finally found his calling.

Personality and Traits

Mal is a restless spirit, filled with the adventuresome nature of his warrior father and spacer mother. Most of his life decisions have been in pursuit of the elusive something more. He longs for adventure, and can be a bit of thrillseeker. However, he is loyal and honorable, and protective of those he calls his friends. He, like many soldiers, is a bit blunt and crass, with a weakness for smoking cigarra's and drinking. He is incredibly brave, and skilled leader of men, the combination of which earned him first class bloodstripes during his time in the army.

Skills

Mal was trained to be a mandalorian warrior by his father, but due to his father's death, never went through verd'goten, instead shipping out with his mother, and catching a serious case of wanderlust. He is an expert shot, and skilled hand to hand fighter, with, as a CO once said, "a gift for getting back up". He is also an accomplished pilot and natural mechanic, having souped up Tranquility far beyond its stock specifications.

Equipment

Mal carries his father's custom mando ripper everywhere, feeling naked without it. He also carries his father's beskar knife, and owns his father's custom mando assault rifle. Also in his possession is his father's armor, but he never wears it. Since joining the CJO, he also possesses the standard green training lightsaber issued to all students.

Behind the Scenes

Mal was originally inspired by Malcolm Reynolds of the television series Firefly, created by Joss Whedon. He has since, through additional inspiration and drunken musings by his creator, departed a great deal from the original source material. Parts of his backstory, such as the name of his unit and his ship are used in tribute to that original inspirational moment. There is also a lot of myself in this character, perhaps more then any of my others.
