The Akula-class corvette, nicknamed the ReconVette, was designed as a replacement for the individually modified Vigilant Shadow corvettes that originally escorted the Daedalion/Esk cruiser Martlet. Where the previously used escorts had started life as standard multipurpose corvettes and had undergone costly upgrades and conversions to allow them to fill the role they were placed in, the ReconVette was designed from the start with reconnaissance in mind.
